Minerals and Intro to Earth Science Test Review

Below is a listing of some topics you can expect to see on this week's test.

Observation: something noticed or perceived through your senses, such as: seeing, hearing, or touching something directly. "I hear thunder" is an observation. Inference: a conclusion that is developed through evidence, reasoning, or past observations.

Density is the measure of how much “stuff” is in a given amount of space. For example, a block of the heavier element lead (Pb) will be denser than the softer, lighter element gold (Au). A block of Styrofoam is less dense than a brick. It is defined as mass per unit volume.

The formula for density is the mass of an object divided by its volume. In equation form, that's d = m/v , where d is the density, m is the mass and v is the volume of the object.

Percentage of deviation which is calculated by subtracting the old value from the new value, and then dividing the result by the old one.

Latitudes are horizontal lines that measure distance north or south of the equator. Longitudes are vertical lines that measure east or west of the meridian in Greenwich, England. Together, latitude and longitude enable cartographers, geographers and others to locate points or places on the globe.

Minerals • Definite chemical composition • Inorganic • Solid • Crystalline • Occur naturally

Mineral Properties • Hardness – Moh’s Scale of Hardness 1-10 – Hardness is the resistance to being scratched – Find by attempting to scratch minerals with materials of a known hardness (like your fingernail 2-2.5 or glass 5.5-6)

Mineral Properties • Streak = color of powder – Find by rubbing mineral against a ceramic streak plate to create powder • Luster = shine from unweathered surface – Metallic (shiny like metal) or non-metallic (dull or glassy)

Mineral Properties • Cleavage = breaks along smooth, parallel sides • Fracture = uneven breaking surfaces • Breaking pattern depends on atomic arrangement of mineral and if zones of weakness exist
